Raw thoughts: Open Technology Vision for sake of all Humanity

Open source is software that open and free for use and change by anyone, it can work or be adapted to work almost on any piece of hardware. Open source projects are made upon thousands of work hours of experts, all over the world, with ideological idea that technology could be shared to promote the humanity as whole. A few examples: UNIX, GNU, Linux, Wikipedia, Android, Firefox, OpenOffice and many many others. Nowadays we are living in era of prosper for open source idea, any individual can create something that seemed impossible before. Today we are sitting on the shoulders of giants, and we almost can touch the sky. But I think that we can progress even further with open source ideology. A few ideas I have on that matter:

  1. Why don’t we legislate laws to make any piece of software, to be available as open source, for sake of humanity, after some period of time? But I don’t think that this period of time should be more then 10 years, because of huge progress in technology. Basically same idea as patents registrations.
  2. To apply open source ideology on hardware, and any other aspect of technology like chemistry and biology, and maybe even on all the knowledge we have? Of course our private knowledge shouldn’t be included, for example diaries ( And maybe it should? Deserve a debates… ) , but almost anything else should.
  3. Limit the period of time in which royalties required to be paid due to patent, and limit creators rights ownership time. I don’t understand why we let record labels own the creator rights that should belong to singers, writers and composers, and not to the record labels. I am not even sure, why should we allow patents and creators rights to be sold or inherited, and be used by huge companies to collect money for basically nothing, without helping somehow to the creation process itself. To me all these laws seems as legislated for already very powerful and rich elements in our society, and for them alone, in very injustice and illogical way, and they don’t helping or promoting somehow the society. These laws are taxes for true parasitism, why don’t we change them?

Is it about socialism vs capitalism? It seems to me that both of them failed in execution, in their pure forms. For example communistic USSR, where I was born and lived for 7 years, everything belonged to the state. Almost everybody was having roughly the same salary, of course the people with more connections got more. And people with more power got exponentially more than common people. But this system was wrong and deeply corrupted. Today I can compare this regime, with the one that I’m living in today, Israeli, which is much more capitalistic, and largely very similar to the US. It’s flawed and corrupted too, in different but also somehow similar manner. In a way, that already rich people, that own most of the companies at state, have a huge influence over politicians, and eventually force legislation in their favor. So the wealth going from poor and middle class people to tycoons. Each year we pay more for having less, and government just preserves the inequality. So we need to think logically, what can promote us as human society, to be better, as whole and as better place for each and single individual. Technology and knowledge should belong to everyone, and not just to the people who can bribe the politicians.

International Women’s Day 2014

In some sense this day is chauvinistic reminder, that even in most modern western countries women don’t have equal rights and opportunities. Stereotypical norms of societies, keep oppressing women all over the world. I hope that we will change this situation, and just let people the freedom to be whoever they feel and want to be.

In other sense, it’s a day for women empowering and admiration, and it’s great. Most of the people that I ever loved are women. And I just want to thank you all for making this world much better place!

Inspired by Lana Wachowski

I saw this amazing speech by Lana Wachowski and I felt inspired by it. Her story of finding her true identity, presenting it to her family and now to the whole world. She did it because there are things that we must do, not for ourself, but for others. To give hope.

All over the world there are people who don’t fit into boundaries that were defined since dark ages of human history, by prejudice and religion. It is a very long process to fix society’s mistakes that are thousands years old. But I hope that with inspiration that give us people like Lana Wachowski we’ll be more patient and thoughtful with each other.

Unpredictable World

It’s very weird how much random and unpredictable this world is. Yesterday I had lunch much later than usual. And I sat next to pretty girl that works with me. She is very attractive, one year younger than me. I talked with her a few times, and generally she seems a nice person. I’m interested in her, but she never gave me any sign. Not so long ago I tried to ask her something unrelated in facebook. From that interaction I understood that she probably not interested. So I left her alone. Anyway romance in workplace is not that good idea. It could lead to very bad atmosphere in workplace, or even to sexual harassment allegations, and it can have permanent influence for all your life. So I tried to be as safe as possible, and just ignore her.
Anyway yesterday I sat next to this girl. And the people around the table told a funny stories, we all laughed. And I had a chance to talk with her a little. She volunteering to help children with homework once a month, with other people from our company. So she told that there are no enough volunteers today, and it would be canceled. I mentioned that I signed up to volunteer too. Actually I signed up because of her. She talked with the person who arrange the volunteers and we were supposed to be in the same volunteer group next week. This gesture on her side give me a little hope that I would have chance to spend with her little time. And maybe she isn’t so indifferent toward me. I’m not delusional, it’s probably nothing, just one positive thought.
Today when I were supposed to go home, coworkers told me that our company started fire people. And the girl that I’m talking today about, is fired. Unbelievable. I understand the importance of work, it is the only think that stabilize my life now, and it could be very devastating to be fired. So I feel bad for her. Also seems that nobody know what are the plans of our company, and how many more people will be fired. Maybe I’m the next.
Now I have 3 reasons to feel bad about: 1. I may lose my job. 2. She lost her job. 3. Another hope of mine are ruined.
It happened so fast, i’m not sure what I feel right now…
